Embracing My Internal Autumn

Autumn is well under way here in the southern hemisphere. Although I live in Coastal Central Queensland, I don't really get to see the physical effects of the leaves on the trees changing to their beautiful reds and browns and eventually falling off the tree to leave it bare and barren during the cold, frosty winter.

I have however, been experiencing my own internal season of autumn. I celebrated
my 41st birthday last week and have noticed a subtle, yet significant shift in my energy, focus and attention. I see things that are falling away and rather struggling to fight to hold onto them like I once would have, I am allowing myself to surrender to the universal flow. On so many levels, I am releasing what is no longer serving me.

The night of the full moon, I spent some time releasing people from my social media accounts, letting go of groups that I don't actively participate in any more, unsubscribing from a barrage of emails that clog my inbox on a daily basis, keeping my attention distracted and off-task. And it felt good. For way too long, I've felt distracted and overwhelmed with social media. My new plan is to simplify. I've made a promise to myself to not sign up for anything 'free' for the next month. I did a pretty good job of that in April and want to continue on that journey, because it feels good to me.

It's hard work. It's a challenge to unwire your brain from busy and constantly on the go. It's tiring. And yet I know the reward will be worth it. Once the untangling has happened and I can see all the bits clearly. I will know when the time is right to step forth and to step into my path wholly, completely and full of presence.

I've started saying 'no' to more things that once upon a time I would have felt obligated to say yes to in order to keep the status quo. That feels so freeing and liberating on so many levels. My wellbeing is currently my number one priority. And yes that may seem selfish to some, yet I see how greatly my life is affected when I am not this for myself.

I am accepting where I am currently at with my health and seeing this time of deep healing as a blessing rather than a curse. I am choosing to focus my attention on the present moment and on the day that I am in, rather than beating myself up and running an internal commentary that constantly berates myself for not doing more, being more or being someplace else other than where I am currently at.

I am choosing to see the joy in the moments and have allowed myself to achieve one thing a day - no more and if I am not up to that one thing, then I let go of it gently, knowing that tomorrow is a brand new day to get that thing done. No more unrealistic lists of things that appear to be life and death. I have proven to myself that life goes on regardless of what is or isn't ticked off my list that day.

My key takeaways from this internal autumn that I am currently undergoing:

* You are allowed to take the slow lane for as long as it takes to renew

* No is a completely acceptable and allowable response

* The hustle isn't for everyone, slow down and align with what fits right for you

* Things falling away is a natural progression, mother nature shows us that at least once a year. We can't keep holding onto all of the things forever - whether that be physically, emotionally or digitially

* Each day you open your eyes is a blessing. Choose to find joy in the moments.

I'm curious to know if you are also experiencing a season of shedding at the moment? Or if you are currently feeling overwhelmed in life, what could you allow to fall away?

Until next time,

Big Love

My happy place. My healing place. My grounding place.

My happy place. My healing place. My grounding place.

Its fair to say the last couple of months have been a little shaky and nothing like I'd envisioned life 'post job' to be. Yet I understand everything happens for a reason and am choosing to see the blessings arising from really slowing my life down

Some days are good and others not so great. My body lets me know when I've overdone it and really need to rest. I've struggled with sharing openly this part of me. I've had a few realisations this morning that I'd like share, in case they resonate and give you permission to take the slow lane for a bit.

Firstly I feel a lot of shame around not functioning fully at 100% all of the time. I've felt defective because a fast-paced life just isn't my thing. Being able to put words around my feelings has been another challenge and I'm working through that at the moment.

My nervous system is currently recalibrating after too many years of being under constant stress and pressure to perform and achieve. This has been a constant theme for much of my life. I grew up in a home fuelled by anxiety and have had jobs that have been fast-paced, so my body is used to running on adrenaline pretty much as a norm. The fact that my health is showing me that things are not in balance shouldn't come as a surprise really. But it's been a major challenge to slow right down, to pause the achievement button for a bit, to allow myself to fully embrace the space of being in between, to become aware that the agenda I'd had for myself is not in alignment with my greater good at this present moment.

There's a lot of "undoing" happening right now on many levels. The greatest gift I can afford myself is time, space and patience to allow my body to come back into its natural balance, where it is thriving rather than merely surviving. I'll post again soon to share with you some of the ways and the processes I'm embracing to help me with this.

And here is your permission slip to slow down, to breathe, to recalibrate, to come back home to you.

Big love

Week One - Done and Dusted

"All About Me August" has passed it's first week. I'm pleased to say that I have been making much more of a conscious effort to take care of myself first. It's a challenge though and a habit that's going to take some time to form. I just keep reminding myself that it's important to look after me so that I can give back to those who need me most.

Some of the things I have noticed over the past week include:

* My mood has been a lot more stable
Image result for serenity peace* Giving to me feels good
* I am having so much fun remember what I enjoy doing and making sure I do them
* I am learning to appreciate the little things (it's amazing what 5 minutes sitting on the grass in fresh air and sunshine can do for you)
* Things really can wait and the world won't end if I don't respond straight away (emails don't self destruct if you read them and then don't action them)
* My hiatus from Facebook was more of a challenge that I had anticipated (I think I lasted 2 days before I was back on there. I will post more about this in the coming days)
* Playing beautiful mantras is soothing for the soul
* I had forgotten how much I love reading and holding a physical book, not an electronic device
* I feel so much better when I feel my body nourishing foods, move it and talk to myself nicely
* I've been compelled to declutter, my bathroom has been cleaned (a post is in the pipeline on that, watch this space!)

What's not working so well?

* The tendency to strive is still quite strong. I am constantly reminding myself to be present in the moment, to be happy where I am at.
* Giving myself a break, knowing that this is a process and not a quick fix
* Being hard on myself when I can't fit everything into my days (I am learning to say no, so this is a work in progress)

How are you going? What have you noticed? What's working for you? What's not working so well that you are going to change up this week? I'd love to hear how you're finding the journey. Leave me a comment of feel free to shoot me an email shanelle@connectioncaoching.com.au

Day 3 - How Did I Even End Up Here?

It's no secret that I suffered PND with my first-born. I was feeling quite proud to have become a second-time mum and seemingly kept my mental health intact. Or did I?

Recently things have been creeping back into my life that started to trigger off some warning lights.
* Teary at the drop of a hat
* Going from calm to angry in 3.0 seconds flat
* Feeling blah a lot of the time
* Overly emotional
* Saying yes to everyone and everything else and leaving me til last
* Generally feeling completely out of whack

Knowing what I know and having travelled the road I've travelled, these are cues that things are not the way that they need to be for me to function properly in my day-to-day life. Now that's a scary thing to admit.

Truth be told, it doesn't matter who you are or what you do, taking care of one's mental health is one of the most imperative parts of looking after yourself. Knowing when things aren't right and knowing when to ask for help is daunting, yet important to put steps into place to get life back on track to being some form of  "normalacy" (whatever that may be for you).

These feelings have prompted me to start "All About Me August". During the month I am makingsure to take care of myself first so that I am more able to give to those who need me. Yes it's a challenge, but I am confident that by the end of the month a new habit of self-care will have been formed.

I would encourage you to take stock of where you're at at the moment. How is your mental health really? If you're feeling out of whack and things just aren't right, it doesn't hurt to have a chat with your GP. Beyond Blue have some great resources on their website. And remember, Lifeline is a phone call away if you need to chat with someone.

Day 1 of "All About Me August"

I feel compelled to share my progress of Day 1 of "All About Me August". I'm not sure if this will become a regular thing or not, let's just see where the wind takes us.

I'm pleased to report that Day 1 went pretty well and was actually a smoother transition than what I had an anticipated.

Image result for eat pray love quotesThe exciting thing was that I managed to get a head start on Friday night. Once the kids were tucked into bed, I pulled out "Eat, Pray, Love" and started to read it again, with some jazz playing away in the background. Absolute bliss. So simple. So easy and yet something I NEVER do for myself. It was a beautiful way to end the day.

My wake up call came at the regular 6.30am with the sounds of Mr 1 babbling away in his cot. Instead of getting out of bed and going straight to him, I took my time,  had a shower and dressed for the day (something I NEVER usually do). It felt great to have already done something so simple for myself to start the day, that I wasn't bothered by the fact that it was Saturday and I was up already.

Progress on the disconnection from social media is going fairly well. While I will admit I wasn't able to stay off the whole day, I did check in a couple of times to see what was happening in the world. However, I didn't feel drawn in to be on there aimlessly or like a billion things other people had posted. Let's see what Day 2 brings on that front.

Now I'm not sure if this is pure coincidence or not, but I found I was able to do more during the day because I felt I had already done something for myself. We had a pretty busy day with a birthday party and a few other jobs to do. The kids and I spent time together washing the car, going for a walk and getting dinner ready. It was lovely to have that time and to enjoy doing something with them.

Image result for danielle la porte strivingMy other commitment to myself this month is to stop striving; to stop pushing myself to do things that aren't ready to take shape yet, to stop wanting more than what I have now, to stop coming up with ideas and to stop saying "yes" to everyone else before I've really checked in with me to see if it's something worth my while. This is what I am finding challenging. My brain is so used to constantly going, seeking, searching, looking for possibilities, it's a struggle to be in the moment. Perhaps tomorrow I can start some meditation, perhaps that will help me to learn to be in the moment.

I totally understand that this is the first day of a 31-day month and anything is likely to happen over the coming days. Starting is starting and progress is progress, no matter how small. As part of my preparation for the month,  I sat down and wrote a list of things I like to do that make me feel good. I will refer back to this during the times I need to be guided in the right direction.

Will you be joining me on this quest to make August "All About You?" What things make you feel good? What challenges have you come across?

Until next time I feel the need to share this journey with you.
Sending love xxxxx

Making August All About Me

It's recently come to my attention that I've fallen back into the habit of putting everyone else's needs ahead of mine and have begun to pay a price for that oversight. Sometimes patterns keep occurring in our lives until we finally get the lesson from them.

As someone who preaches to my clients constantly about the importance of self care and looking after
oneself, recent events have come to light that I have not in fact been practicing that which I preach. So instead of beating myself up about it, I've decided that for the month of August, I am going to commit to getting myself back on track.

Back on track with exercise, eating better, taking time to meditate, taking time to write, taking time to really connect with my kids,  laughing, having fun, being spontaneous, taking a bath, walking on the beach, cooking and trying new recipes - all of the little things that cost next to nothing yet are so vital to my existence and quality of life.

In order to make sure I have time for these things, I am going to be taking a break from social media. I will pop in every now and then, but it won't sit open all day on my computer. I am going to invest this previously unproductive time into writing blog posts, as that's something I really love to do, yet always run out of time.

I am also going to wake up 20 - 30 minutes earlier in the morning to take some time to meditate and be grateful for all that I have and all I have been blessed with in this life.

Each day I will aim to do at least 1 thing just for me. It may only be for a few minutes, but at least I will have invested in my own wellbeing, fuelled up the tank and have the ability to get through the day.

There are also some things that I am going to let go of and stop doing.
* Stop striving and just be in the moment
* Stop worrying (it probably will never happen anyway)
* Stop trying to make everyone else happy at the expense of my own wellbeing

So here it is, my declaration of "doing". You can hold me to account and I will check in throughout the month to let you know how I'm going.

I'd love it if you'd like to join me  on this little venture. Comment below if you're in on this with me or feel free to email me at shanelle@connectioncoaching.com.au if you'd like to chat more about this.

The Greatest Gift You Can Give Your Children - Guest Post by Alison Bengough (The Mindset Effect)

If your children are young you’ve probably got routines for everything. Sleeping, eating, pooping, cleaning, dressing, toilet training, bathing, comforting, soothing. As they get older add in soothing boo boos, being a taxi service, school volunteering, reasoning, disciplining, medical & dental care, socialisation, birthday parties, family time, formal education, sporting commitments … the list is endless.

The commitment you take on financially, socially, emotionally, physically and psychologically is positively astronomical! Day after day, week after week, year after year. And when you have multiple children you can multiply the load you carry. Add in children with special needs and the feelings of overwhelm can skyrocket!
If that’s not enough, you get bombarded multiple times a day by unsolicited opinions about how you “should” be doing things. From family, friends, acquaintances, school parents, sporting parents, teachers, doctors, other professionals … even the media.

Is it any wonder most parents feel like they’re heads will explode any minute!
But you keep going, putting one foot in front of the other, because you made a very strong commitment to those little people you gave birth to. You love them, no matter what, and you would go to the ends of the earth for them, even if it meant to go without ourself. Right? (I can hear the chorus of “yeses” from here!)

Most parents know that all learning experiences begin with babies exploring the world around them. They respond to energy; angry vibes, sad vibes, happy vibes. They learn by watching. As they grow, if we get angry, so do they. If we allow others to treat us disrespectfully, so do they. If we fail to care for ourselves, so do they.

For this reason, literally and figuratively, the greatest gift you can give your children, is a parent who takes care of him or herself.

When you prioritise your own self-care they learn,
·         That you are worth being taken care of,
·         That they are worth being taken care of. Simply from watching your example, they know that allowing others to treat them disrespectfully is hurtful, and they are much less likely to allow themselves to be taken advantage of,
·         The value of boundaries,
·         The value of waiting,
·         To stand up for themselves,
·         To listen to their heartsong.

They also receive a much more peaceful, loving and happy environment to live in. Simply because you will be much more peaceful, loving and happy to be around. And since they pick up and reflect your vibes, they in turn will be much more peaceful, loving and happy. It really is a win-win for everyone.
The core message here is this: Self-care is not selfish. It is essential!

Now that you have the message, you may be wondering how you start the process of taking care of you, especially if you haven’t done it in years. The greatest tip I can give you is to start small, take it slow and build it up gradually. If you haven’t done it in so long that you forgot how, it will likely feel foreign to you for a while. And if your kids aren’t used to seeing you do it, you might get some objections to it (especially if it takes attention away from them). You need to be able to prepare yourself for those objections and plan how you can deal with some of the emotions that come up as a result (guilt being a big one). If you feel bad about taking time out for you, consider talking with a trusted friend or counsellor/psychologist to help you process some of those emotions.

To begin with, you might try some of these strategies:

1.       Schedule some time for yourself on a daily basis. If you’re not used to taking it, start with just 5 minutes of uninterrupted time and build up from there. If you start small it will be easier to fit into your schedule and it won’t feel so alien.

2.       As you build up the time, try exploring new things. Places, activities. Experiment with what you do and don’t like (only one way to find out!)

3.       Remind yourself regularly why you are doing this. By taking time out for you, you’re not depriving them of your attention. You are ultimately providing your kids with a better parent.
4.       Get in touch with your values. Values underpin everything we do, so getting clear on them will help support your position.

5.       Self-care doesn’t need to be expensive. It can be as simple as sitting in the park communing with nature or going for a 10 minute walk to clear your head.

6.       Schedule play dates with other mum’s in your area. By setting up a “club”, the kids get to work on their social skills and you get some time out. Rotate this routine so you each get a break. And remember, sometimes the self-care comes down to adult conversation. The kids can play while the adults work on their social skills!

7.       Remind yourself that you don’t have to do it all. The old adage, “it takes a village to raise a child” is true. Call on the support of the people around you. And if you feel isolated, try reaching out to local services. Some will have play groups or support groups where you can meet other parents and create friendships. This is especially important if you have kids with special needs. Carers organisations can be particularly helpful in this case. There is one in every state of Australia.

The Delicate Art of Finding Yourself - Guest Post from Gayel Stewart-Aires (Modern Mummy Mayhem)

When we become parents for the first time, we are pretty schooled up on how to care for our newborns.  There are books, magazines, brochures, products, blogs, websites yahdee yahdee yahdaa and we feast on all of them.  We want only what is best for this brand new life we have created and we will stop at nothing to give it all.
We pull all nighters when they are ill and chug back the caffeine the next day to keep going.  We carry them on our hips, twist, turn and pick things up regardless of how sore our backs have become.  We shower in seconds. Forget to brush our teeth. Rarely exercise and often finish off their scraps instead of eating whole nutritious meals.
For some of us, we run on autopilot during the years with young children.  For others it is routine, routine, routine.   For nearly all of us though, we forget that we need to continue on caring for ourselves, so that we can care for these precious little inventions, our babes, our children.
I have 3 children.  Ages 11, 9 and 3.  After my first daughter, I was gobsmacked at how little she slept, how much sitting on the couch breastfeeding I had to do and how little time I had for myself.
Nobody ever told me about this.  Nobody ever told me either, that the smallest of chores I once did without thinking, would become very hard to complete.  Nobody ever told me that this stuff could send me crazy.  Even worse though, was the fact that nobody ever thought to tell me that I needed to be finding time for myself as a matter of priority.
That I needed to nurture my soul and not just my Daughter.
So unknowingly, I worked really hard at being a Mum.  I later worked really hard at being a Mum of two daughters and then a single Mum of two daughters and full time employee.
My diet was atrocious. I rarely exercised and my smiles were forced.  I did nothing for myself that made me happy.  My kids on the other hand thrived.
Years later I met my now Husband and together brought into the world a little boy.  A little boy who is now 3, and who has suffered from Gastro Oesphagael Reflux Disease since he was born.   To suggest this has turned our world upside down is an understatement.
By the time he was 6 months old I was exhausted.  Life was like groundhog day.  Relentless.  Hard and never ending.
It was about then that I realised that it was sink or swim time.  I could no longer sustain ignoring my own needs.  I had to start carving out small parcels of time for things I enjoyed.  Initially this was really hard but I started to simplify things.  I enjoyed taking pictures, so off I would go outside, with the baby in the carrier, snapping away.  Looking for small detail and beauty.   It was a small escape for small amounts of time, but it was glorious.
Our little boy spent 2 years screaming.  I spent 2 years appeasing and soothing those screams by carrying him around and breastfeeding him.  On the bad days, I would look in the mirror and not even see myself properly.  On the good days, I would steal back some time.  I ate up any information about blogging and social media that I could find, took photos and then started my blog.
Eventually, my health did begin to fail though.  I lost a lot of weight and had some unfavourable and scary test results. I thought I was caring for myself but I wasn't really.   I was being too haphazard in my approach.
It was only at this point that I truly realised my own self worth.  The one thing that I threw away the day I brought home my first child and never regained.
With the never ending support of my Husband, I made a pact to exercise more, eat better and do a few things that made me happy, consistently.  Not just a few hours here and there.
A year later now, I sit here writing this piece, feeling that for the first time ever I am comfortable in my own skin.  I have more energy and I smile truly from the inside.  There is nothing forced about who I am.  I am me and I know exactly who that is.
Not just my children's mother.
It isn't just that I have suddenly become happy either.  It took a lot of hard work.  It took what felt like selfishness initially (but wasn't really), sacrifices, good planning, the willingness to ask for help and consistent commitment.
It is a delicate art, a game even, finding time for yourself when you are Mother.  The benefits are enormous and the disadvantages to ignoring these needs of yours is frightening.
So from me to you.  Please please, don't give up your self worth.  Don't stop doing things you love and enjoy.  Those things that you love, make you who you are.  When you are who you are, you are most happy.  The crappiest of days can be weathered when you know who you are.
Some days this advice may all seem too impossible, other days it may only be a few minutes you can offer yourself.  But honestly, once you shift your mindset off being entirely focused on those you love and include yourself too, you will rock this life home my friend.
I PROMISE.
